Job Title: Payroll Director

Location: Mclean VA- in office 3-4 days in the first 60 days then more flexibility

Salary: $150-180K + bonus (Depending on experience)

Requirements:
  • Workday Payroll and Workday Time Tracking is required
  • 10+ years of payroll experience
  • Large organization experience (10,000 on payroll or more)
  • Must have Canadian payroll processing experience.
  • 5+ years of leading others on a team

Job Summary:

The Payroll Director leads and manages the organization's payroll operations to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing across all employee groups. This role oversees payroll strategy, system implementation, tax compliance, and reporting while driving process improvements and ensuring alignment with company policies and federal, state, and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage all aspects of payroll operations for multi-state (and possibly international) employees.
  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, tax filings, and payments in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversee payroll system(s), ensuring proper configuration, data integrity, and upgrades as needed.
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Legal teams to align payroll practices with compensation plans, benefits programs, and labor regulations.
  • Develop, document, and implement payroll policies and procedures.
  • Manage relationships with third-party payroll vendors and service providers.
  • Direct and mentor payroll staff, setting performance goals and ensuring ongoing training and development.
  • Lead or participate in audits, including internal, external, and government compliance audits.
  • Monitor changes in payroll legislation and implement necessary updates.
  • Prepare and present reports to senior leadership on payroll metrics, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Ensure compliance with wage & hour laws (FLSA), tax regulations, and reporting requirements such as W-2s, 1099s, and ACA reporting.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll practices, regulations, and systems (Workday)
  • Experience managing multi-state and/or international payrolls.
  • Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations, garnishments, and labor laws.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication abilities.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation strongly preferred.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with payroll system implementations or migrations.
  • Knowledge of union payroll and collective bargaining agreements (if applicable).
  • Familiarity with financial and HR systems integration.
