Our Outside Plant Technicians start off earning between $14.25 to $28.56 per hour. With our amazing wage opportunities, our average starting earnings begin at $59,410 per year. Individual starting salary within this range may depend on geography, experience, expertise, and education/training.

An Outside Plant Technician performs the construction work required to lay telephone cable and conduits underground and strings cable and wire from pole to pole. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: 1) Installs, connects, maintains, rearranges and dismantles aerial, buried, building or underground telephone wiring and cable. 2) Performs construction work, such as; digging holes, placing poles, laying cable and conduit, and unreeling, pulling and stringing wire and cable from pole to pole. 3) Connects wires and cables to terminals and attaches or detaches various kinds of hardware to wires, cable, building or poles. 4) Climbs poles or uses bucket trucks. Enters tunnels, manholes and trenches to place materials. 5) Operates light and/or heavy duty electrical and hydraulic equipment and hand tools in the installation, repair and maintenance of outside plant facilities. Operates propane or gas-powered compressors. 6) May prepare and/or maintain reports, records, logs or requisitions. 7) May perform other duties such as ordering supplies, materials, interpreting blueprints and specifications and logging extra supplies, material and hours. 8) Positions SBC as the premier provider of choice. 9) Performs all other duties comparable to the above as assigned. 10) Uses and/or wears appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety practices and procedures.
Our Outside Plant Technicians must have the following:
Valid state driver's license
Non-negligent driving record
Meet 275 lbs weight limit due to safety restrictions
Ability to pass a Department of Transportation Physical
Ability to pass CDL Training
Ability to perceive differences in wire and cable colors
Ability to lift and move up to 100lbs
Qualify on pre-employment screening:
